Before You Leave Home

A few minutes of preparation makes choosing and transporting a tree much easier.

Measure your space. Check the ceiling height and the width of the area where the tree will stand. Remember to allow room for the tree stand and topper.

Choose the location. Plan to keep the tree away from fireplaces, heat vents, radiators, and other direct heat sources.

Dress for the farm. Wear clothing suited to the day’s weather and sturdy shoes for walking outdoors.

Plan for transport. Bring tie-downs or straps appropriate for your vehicle and follow the vehicle or roof-rack manufacturer’s instructions. If you have questions about tools, access, or current tree availability, contact the farm before arriving.

Choosing a Tree That Fits Your Home

Start with the measurements you took at home. A tree can look smaller outdoors than it will in your living room, so include the stand and topper when deciding on height.

Walk around the tree and view it from more than one angle. Look at its overall shape, branch spacing, and the side that will face the room. Think about the ornaments you plan to hang and the amount of floor space available.

Take your time. Choosing the tree together is part of the U-Cut experience. Our team can help during the selection process, or give your family space to explore.

Getting Your Tree Home Safely

Secure the tree carefully before leaving the farm. Use tie-downs designed for your vehicle and confirm that the tree does not block the driver’s view, lights, or license plate. Follow the instructions for your vehicle or roof rack, and recheck the tree before driving away. On a longer trip, stop in a safe place to inspect the tie-downs again.

Keeping a Fresh-Cut Tree Fresh at Home

Once the tree is home, make a fresh cut across the base of the trunk before placing it in the stand. Put it in water right away.

Use plain tap water and check the stand every day, especially during the first several days. Never let the water level fall below the cut end of the trunk. Keep the tree away from heat sources, and check lights and cords before decorating.
